Recently, I’ve had the opportunity to use a tool called N-central. It’s a SolarWinds product targeted towards MSPs. This isn’t the time nor the place to go into any kind of review of the product. Rather, this will be a starting point for what I suspect will be many necessary articles pertaining to N-central.

On multiple computers, I’ve encountered the following error while trying to install the N-central probe:

Please pay attention to the following…

Local Administrator

In order for this software to function properly the specified account must have local administrator rights.

localadminncentral

This message becomes particularly aggravating because the user is most certainly already a local administrator. It seems that no matter what groups I put the user in I continue to be plagued with this worrisome warning.

Fortunately, there seems to be a fairly simple solution (more of a workaround)!

For reference, here are a few quick details surrounding my experience with the error:

  • Running N-central 10.2.1.350
  • Error seen on the following editions of Windows Server:
    • 2008 Standard (64-bit)
    • 2008 Standard FE – Small Business Edition (64-bit)
    • 2012 R2 Standard (64-bit)
  • Using “Domain User” credentials option during probe setup
  • Using N-central service account with Domain Admin membership
  • When error occurs, machine is logged in with a shared Administrator account (though not always the same account or the same domain)

So, this is how I’ve been able to get past this error:

Simply log into the machine using the N-central service account and install the probe.
